Are you ready for the 3rd Annual SFU Social Science Camp? This year we have special guests from the Vancouver Aquarium. This is a FREE, fun, and, full day educational camp for children aged 7-12 with and without Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). One part of the camp involves your child participating in a research study using computer games. The research study requires minimal participation, the majority of the day is devoted to fun crafts and interactive games! Parents will fill out questionnaires as part of the study.

“First Step”は、発達障がい、またはその疑いのある人をもつご家族、またこの分野に関連のある方々が、互いに協力し合い、よりよい生活を送れるよう支援する場を提供したいという目的で設立されたサポートグループです。 発達障がいをもつ子供を持つ親や、発達障がいに関連する分野で働くスタッフで運営しています。

そしてこのたび、第一回目のイベントとしてお茶会を企画いたしました。この会が、発達障がいをもつ方のご家族が安心して自分の思いを話せる場となり、また発達障がいについて情報交換をしたり理解を深めたり、悩んでいるのは自分だけではないと気持ちが楽になったり、なんとなく抱えていた発達についてのモヤモヤや不安を少しでも解消できる場になってほしいと、運営メンバー一同願っています。

Luke, 25, is autistic and has lived a sheltered life with his grandparents. But his world is turned upside down when his grandmother dies and he is forced to live with his dysfunctional relatives who have no patience for him or his senile grandfather, who they quickly force into a nursing home. Luke is left with his grandfather's final semi-coherent words: "Get a job. Find a girl. Live your own life. Be a man!" For the first time in his life, Luke has a mission. He is about to embark on a quest.

Children with ASD grow up, and as the numbers of adolescents and adults with ASD expand, we need to consider how to prepare them for the challenges of adult life. This presentation will provide an overview of the components of effective, behavioral analytic intervention with older learners. Specific topics include community transition, employment, behavior support, healthy sexuality, and quality of life.

ASBC (Autism Society of British Columbia) is sponsoring a six-class course about the principles of ABA and their practical application to parenting children with autism. The classes will consist of a variety of presentations, guided discussions, brief exercises, video demonstrations and question and answer times. Rather than a traditional lecture style, the classes are designed with a “round table” approach, where parents can bring questions, ideas and input in order to facilitate discussion.

In small group settings, each participant will be given the opportunity to
interact with other children/teenagers of similar age through variety of arts
and craft activities, snack making, sports, games and outdoor activities. Most
importantly, each participant will also learn valuable relationship development
skills specifically related to taking part in a group setting.

Individuals of all ages need to learn many critical functional living skills in order to successfully participate in a wide range of home, school and community-based activities. This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools to analyze and track a learner's functional living skills and develop an individualized intervention program to help a learner become less dependent upon assistance from others.

This 30 hour course has recently been revised to reflect current research and evidence-based practice in teaching students with ASD. Instruction includes pre-readings, practical hands-on training through instructor demonstration and coaching. In addition, course participants complete applied exercises in the key elements of teaching and supporting students with ASD.

A talk by Dr. Lauren Charlot, is being co-sponsored by ACT and the Developmental Disorders Program, UBC's Department of Psychiatry. The lecture, at the Coast Plaza Hotel in Vancouver, is part of the 'Health and Wellbeing in Children, Youth and Adults with Developmental Disabilities Conference'. Dr. Charlot is a Developmental Psychologist who has been working with individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and severe co-occurring psychiatric disorders and challenging behaviors for over 25 years.

This presentation will provide an overview of technology and software applications that can facilitate communication and learning for children with ASD and other developmental disabilities. Participants will see apps for the Apple iPad and will leave with a list of apps that they can use with their children/ students. Participants will also be introduced to the Boardmaker software family and how to create activities to teach vocabulary, sentence construction, math and other concepts.

Challenging behaviours are widely acknowledged as the greatest impediment to educational and social opportunities for children with autism or other developmental disabilities. This two-day workshop will focus on the prevention of problem behaviors. You can register for day 1 only, or days 1 and 2.

Sibshops are pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that our communities need to acknowledge the difficulties faced by brothers and sisters and provide them with the opportunity to connect with each other – in the same way that many parents of children with special needs have benefited from sharing their experiences.

Day 1 will include a siblings panel – a similar panel was a highlight of ACT's recent Vancouver Island Autism Conference with many participants deeply moved by the very special perspective of siblings.

UBCのJoe先生の勉強会も順調に回を重ね、早6回を迎えました。母の日だったのにもかかわらず、大勢の方に出席いただきました。今回の勉強会は、PBSの基礎部分のTheoryから更に発展させて、参加者の親御さんを子どもの年齢によってグループに分け、個々に「現在、悩まされている問題行動」「それらが起こるときの状況」「考えられるきっかけ・理由」「どのようにしていきたいのか・・改善目標」などを、グループ毎に話し合いがら、JOE先生が用意してくださったリストを埋めていく作業をしました。

そして・・今回初の取組みがありました！勉強会のあとに、自由にお喋りを楽しめる＜お茶会＞を開きました。近くのカフェで数時間、お茶を飲みながら、楽しいひとときを過ごすことができました！

On June 8 Anna Matchneva M. Ed, BCBA, PEERS-Certified instructor will be offering a free lecture on the art of friendship and the science behind it.

This course has recently been revised to reflect current research and evidence-based practice. Instruction includes practical hands-on training through instructor demonstration and coaching. In addition, course participants complete applied exercises in the key elements of teaching and supporting students with ASD.
Expectations: the course structure involves pre-readings and class discussions, in addition to ongoing opportunities for the participant to apply concepts through active participation. Dr. Kenneth Cole is a staff psychologist with POPARD as well as a School Psychologist with the Surrey School District. An enthusiastic educator, Dr. Cole brings a wide range of experience to this course.

This thought provoking 'Cafe Scientifique' is being held on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in Vancouver. Speakers include Dr. Grace Iarocci of SFU and Dr. Anthony Bailey of UBC. This free event will be held in the Woodward's Atrium, 111 West Hastings Street, at the new W2 Media Café, "an artist-run, globally networked media arts lab, Incubator, community meeting space and social enterprise cafe serving artists and residents of the Downtown Eastside and Vancouver."

Soup from the Soul is a pre-vocational program that teaches young adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorder basic culinary skills and standard workplace expectations. Under the direction of a professional and experienced chef, participants learn various soup-making methods and donate the soup made to a local charity. Facility tours and kitchen safety lessons are also incorporated into the program. Soup from the Soul is fully supported and will accommodate up to six participants.

前回の第３回目から早１ヵ月ちょっと。第４回を迎えた勉強会も、JOE先生から「どのように子ども達の問題行動に立向かったらいいのか」を伝授していただきました。

その中で、特に印象に残ったのが、「ＡＢＡ＝応用行動分析」とは直接関係ないことなのですが・・・＜毎日のトレーニングを頑張りすぎないこと＞という言葉です。

１１月にスタートをきったこの「PBS勉強会」。参加者を新たに募って、いよいよ１月、本格的に開始しました。自閉症家族会役員４人を含む、合計１４人の主に、自閉症児・発達障害児を抱えている親御さんが参加。University of British Columbiaの特別支援教育の専門家・Joseph M. Lucyshyn教授より、「ＡＢＡ＝応用行動分析」をどのようにに用いて、お子さんとの日常生活をより良いものに変えていくのか。。。を勉強しました。

The Richmond Centre for Disability is holding an After School Connection Program for children with disabilities ages 9 to 15.  This will be held at the RCD every Wednesdays (for kids 12 to 15) and Thursdays (for kids 9 to 12) from February 15 to May 17 - 3:45 to 5pm.
