Making Waves - Swimming lesson registration - starting in January【Vancouver, BC】
Making Waves Vancouver is a not-for profit student initiative founded as a registered chapter of Making Waves Canada in 2012. Our mission is to provide affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with special needs.
The need for our volunteer-based service is evident. A 2002 study by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found that drowning is still the second-leading cause of injury-related death in children, despite a significant increase in general swimming proficiency in North America. Significantly, a separate study found that disabled children are a further ten times likelier to suffer from a submersion injury than the general population (Injury Prevention, 2001).

Theatre Terrific presents Egni's Eye【Vancouver BC】
Egni's Eye is inspired by the true story of Inge Morath, photojournalist and last wife of playwright Arthur Miller. Egni is a palindrome of Inge's name that she used to help sell her photography in a post-war world biased against all things Germanic. They met on the set of The Misfits when Miller was still married to Marilyn Monroe. Inge had been hired as set photographer. Miller and Monroe subsequently divorced. Inge and Miller married, had a daughter and three years later a son, Daniel Miller, born with Down Syndrome. His existence was never acknowledged. Neither parents obituaries, Miller's autobiography Timebends or any of their many publications acknowledge Daniel's existence as a member of the Miller family. Sibshop Training - Building Community Support for Siblings of Children with Special Needs【Vancouver】
Sibshops are pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that our communities need to acknowledge the difficulties faced by brothers and sisters and provide them with the opportunity to connect with each other – in the same way that many parents of children with special needs have benefited from sharing their experiences.
September 14 & 15th in Vancouver
Participants can register for Day 1 only or both days.
Day 1 will include a siblings panel – a similar panel was a highlight of ACT's recent Vancouver Island Autism Conference with many participants deeply moved by the very special perspective of siblings.
See the details page for a breakdown of Day 1 and Day 2.
