日本でも広く知られるようになってきた「自閉スペクトラム症（ＡＳＤ）」。多数派とは違う認知のメカニズムや特殊な感覚を持つため、コミュニケーションなどにハンディキャップが現れやすいといわれている。７月にデビューしたラッパー、ＧＯＭＥＳＳさんは、自閉症であることをカミングアウトして活動している。いったいどんな人なんだろう。話が聞きたくて、彼の所属する「Ｌｏｗ　Ｈｉｇｈ　Ｗｈｏ？　Ｐｒｏｄｕｃｔｉｏｎ」を訪ねた。

「ＧＯＭＥＳＳ（ゴメス）」というミュージシャンとしてのネーム。まるで怪獣のようだと思っ ていたら、本当に怪獣の名前が由来だった。彼の父親いわく「長男だから、（怪獣番組の）『ウルトラＱ』の第１話に登場する怪獣の名前をつけたかった」。周 囲の猛反対から断念。本名は森翔平。だが父親やその周囲の人はずっと当たり前のように彼を「ゴメス」と呼んでいた。子供の頃から、２つの名前があったそう だ。

There have been many recent tales of “Wheel of Fortune” woe, including the unfortunate “Boozing my shore excursion” lady. And the weirdness of the lucky guess “New baby buggy” guy. But Wednesday, the show had its first inspirational contestant in quite awhile with Trent Girone.

The 21-year-old Peoria, Ariz., resident is a self-described “Wheel of Fortune” fanatic, but more important, he’s the first contestant with special needs ever to compete on the show.

Ethan is a 17 year old nonverbal boy with autism and verbal apraxia. At the age of 10, the "experts" said he would never read, write or do math. 自閉症の画家、太田宏介さん（３２）＝福岡県太宰府市＝の個展が２８日から、中央区銀座の柴山画廊で開かれる。ゾウやカメ、ゴリラ、花などをポップに描いたアクリル画から水彩画まで４０点が並ぶ。宏介さんは、２歳で重度の自閉症と診断された。小学５年のとき、指先の器用さに着目した母親と自宅そばの造形教室を訪問。粘土細工から始め、着色で絵筆に慣れ、描き始めた。

１５歳の初個展以来、ファンが増え、今月初め、福岡市の福岡アジア美術館で開かれた「自閉の画家　２２年の軌跡展」は、２５００人が来場する盛況ぶりだった。宏介さんの活動を支える強力な助っ人が兄、信介さん（３９）だ。「幼い頃からかわいかった。でも、障害者が家族にいるって友達に言えなかった」と打ち明ける。

赤ちゃんのある日突然の初語、歩行開始に、ヒトの脳が常に刺激を待ち続け、何らかのスイッチが入ると突然のように機能しはじめることを強く感じると いう人は多い。そして世の中には、頭や脳に強いダメージを受けた後になぜか突然IQが高くなった人々の話も。脳の謎は深まるばかりだ。

4年前に英国テレビのオーディション番組で見いだされ、一躍スターの座に駆け上った「奇跡の歌姫」、スーザン・ボイルさん（52）が8日のオブザーバー紙上で、1年前に発達障害の一つであるアスペルガー症候群と診断されたと告白した。
　

ボイルさんは子供の頃、「脳に損傷がある」と言われ、学校で級友から「単純なスージー」とからかわれていた。今、アスペルガー症候群と診断されたことで「どこが悪いのかはっきり分かり、ほっとしている」と話した。
　

フランスでこの秋に開かれた日仏両国の芸術祭「パリ・アートタイル至宝祭」で、各務原市緑苑南、荒井博子さん（４３）が書道部門の最高賞の芸術大賞を獲得した。荒井さんは十九日、各務原市役所を訪れ、浅野健司市長に喜びを報告した。

「これからも僕は、『自閉症の僕』と闘い続けます」−−。高知西高１年の宇田周平さん（１５）＝高知市＝が４日、市内で行われた県中学・高校英語弁論大会（県教育文化祭運営協議会、土佐教育研究会、県高校教育研究会、毎日新聞高知支局主催）の高校スピーチの部で優勝した。テーマは「ドリーム」。障がいと向き合い「普通の人になりたい」という夢に向かって努力し続けてきた経験や思いを、５分半のスピーチに込めた。宇田さんは、県代表として１２月の四国大会（高松市）に臨み、全国大会を目指す。

そもそものはじまりは、近くにある養護学校の先生の訪問でした。

Jeremiah Swisher knew very early on he was different from his peers. Today though, after years of hard work and determination, Jeremiah is the recipient of the inaugural “Making a Difference For Autism Scholarship Program.” A first of its kind scholarship for those with autism funded through KFM Making a Difference.

On the surface, Jeremiah Swisher is your average 22-year-old. He is a Nicolet High School graduate. During the week he attends school at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. On the weekends, he returns home to Glendale and works at the local movie theater while balancing his homework so he can double major in business administration and political science.

All is not as it seems, however. Day-to-day tasks simple to most can be insurmountable for Jeremiah.

自閉症を抱えながら絵を描き続ける上板町神宅の堀川真也さん（１９）が、プロの絵画作家として活動を始めた。高層ビルなどの建築物を細部まで丁寧に描き込む独特の作風は各方面から評価が高く、１月に作家になって初の個展も開いた。今年はポストカードなどの販売収益の一部を東日本大震災の被災地に寄付する活動にも力を入れるという

横浜市・大倉山で展開している知的・精神障害者のための就労サポートプロジェクト「スイミー」から、知的障害を持つメンバー3人がアロマハンドセラピストとしてデビューした。

知的・精神障害者が賃金を得られるよう就労支援を行っている同プロジェクト。2011年9月から東急東横線大倉山駅近くの「社会福祉法人かれんカフェモア」（横浜市港北区大豆戸町3）で週1回、現役セラピストが講師となって、障害者向けにアロマハンドセラピストの養成講座を続けてきた。

It was photographer Lucas Oleniuk who first noticed Pamela Button’s paint-spattered runners. They were like little Jackson Pollocks, mobile symbols of the art that liberated her.

One of her cousins wrote to the Star to say that few were allowed into Pam’s world when she was painting. “I would have loved for you to watch her paint, to see the transformation in her,” Leah Anstee said.

“She just bounced on her toes smiling and singing as she painted.”

トライアスロンといえば、水泳・自転車・マラソンと立て続けに行わなければいけないハードなスポーツ。米国には、“鉄人レース”とも呼ばれるこの競技に、通常とは異なる形で挑戦し続ける9歳の男の子がいる。彼は、脳性まひで車いす生活を続ける6歳の弟とスポーツをする楽しさを分かち合いたいと、昨年から弟と一緒に各地で開かれるトライアスロン大会に参加。順位に関係なく、2人は兄弟の絆を胸に完走を果たしているそうだ。

７月に行われた日本農業技術検定３級で、階上町のまき・ストーブ販売業「朝日農林」（月舘淳子社長）に勤める八戸市の石沢祐槻さん（２１）と阿部晃平さん（２０）が合格を果たした。２人とも知的障害者Ｂ級に認定されており、難関とされる同試験に知的障害者が合格するのは、青森県内で初めてという。２人は大きな達成感をかみしめ、仕事への熱意を燃やしている。
